As a creative, it’s almost impossible to have an original idea without being inspired by someone else in one way or another. There’s a popular quote that pushes the idea that imitation is the greatest form of flattery, meaning if someone copies your work or acts like you; take it as a compliment instead of an offense. Credit is everything; it’s important to pay homage to those who have paved the way for us, and there’s nothing wrong with imitating your idols but you can only draw so much inspiration before you have to make it your own. There’s been various occasions where I feel like someone is “biting” me and as narcissistic as that sounds I’ve grown accustomed to it. I have to constantly remind myself that it’s not really about who did it first it’s about who did it best. I can’t be mad at someone for doing more with an idea than I was able to.
Pabs’ Prints is known for imitating nostalgic cartoons with a twist, whether it’s a pig or a fusion of characters I make sure it’s noticeably different than the original. In my most recent drop, I pay homage to some classic 2000’s brands such as Kimora Lee Simmons’ Baby Phat with rhinestone tank, and Jordan’s famous Air Jordan logo tee. Pieces like this remind me of my middle school days, rubber bands around the ankle, white tees under tees, baggy fits that could only have existed in that era. It’s no surprise that these brands created a style that was unique to their own and although I don’t dress like that anymore they left me with memories that I’ll cherish forever.
I strive to create something just as timeless. I have fun putting my own spin on unique cartoons and designs, it’s my way of collaborating with creatives who are at the moment out of reach. I consider this my way of “ speaking it into existence” or in this case “drawing it into existence”. Ultimately what I want to encourage is individuality, taking a different route to success, so if you have to use other peoples steps to get there then by all means go for it. Credit your inspirations as much as you can but build something original along the way and for the love of god don’t STEAL people’s work.
